On 20 leaves, attached with a rusty metal clip, otherwise in good condition. One pencil emendation, and the following note at the end: 'The pencilled page numbers are only intended as a rough guide to help in setting up to fit with the illustrations.' The story begins: 'Bonky was a caterpillar. He was a most unusual caterpillar. He was probably the only caterpillar who ever had a wooden leg, and that is being very unusual indeed. | He lived in a garden where everything was exciting, and waiting to be explored, from the smallest snowdrop on the rookery, to the tallest tree right down at the bottom of the rose walk, where the garden stopped, and the cornfield started.' Sanders was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and attended Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He was for some years head of painting at Harrow School of Art. He was elected RA in 1961. Although 'Bonky' did not appear, the couple did publish two works together: 'A Selection of Aesop's Fables' in 1953 and 'Penallan's Folly' ten years later.
