ONE: Mrs Russell Barrington's letter. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly-aged. The letter begins: 'The scheme for securing a Collection of the late Lord Leightons sketches for the nation having now been successfully accomplished the Committee formed for the purpose would esteem it a favour if you would kindly lay the matter before the Queen in case Her Majesty would see fit graciously to add a sketch to the Collection.' She continues by stating that the Prince of Wales has 'presented a beautiful drawing which His Royal Highness purchased last winter from the Fine Art Society. Others interested in the cause have given oil sketches which tey purchased at the sale of Lord Leighton's property last summer.' She ends by stating that she is sending a 'catalogue of the sketches which the Committee has secured'. TWO: Manuscript (presumably autograph) copy of Edwards's reply. 2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly-aged. He informs her that the queen has no sketch which she 'would consider suitable to present to the collection about which you recently wrote'. Docketted on reverse of second leaf: 'August 1897 | Emilie Barrington | If H.M. wd. lend [sic] any sketch to the Leighton Collection | Declined 5.8.97'.
