The company opened canals from Newport to Pontypool and to Crumlin in 1796. It was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1875, and a passenger service from Ebbw Vale to Cardiff still runs. Three items with covering paper on which Sir J. E. Harington has written in ink: 'Sir J E Harington | Monmouthshire Ry & Canal Papers', with the following added in pencil: 'May 21 1849. | Asking my consent to take new shares - | No.' All items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: Autograph Letter Signed from Grevile to Harington. Bristol; 13 June 1849. 2pp., 4to. With envelope sealed with red wax bearing two postmarks, addressed to 'Sir Jno. E. Harington Bart | 3 Wilton Crescent | Belgrave Square | London'. He explains that Ruscoe has sent the circular (Item Two below), 'with a Copy of the Resolutions for the Auction of new Shares offering one Share for every three Shares now held, together with the form of a consent [Item Three below]' has been sent to 'Miss Kinsey', but that although she is 'desirous to accept the offer', she does not know Harington's 'Wishes upon the Subject'. In consequence Grevile is sending Harington the papers, and explains how he or 'Mr. Balfour' may arrange the matter. TWO: Printed circular by 'Ralph Ruscoe, | Principal Clerk.' Monmouth Railway and Canal Office, Newport, May 21st, 1849.' 1p., 4to. On recto of the first leaf of a bifolium; wiith the recto of the second leaf carrying, in small print, a 'Copy of Resolutions of the General Assembly of the Company of Proprietors of the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company, Held at the Canal House, in Newport, on Wednesday, May 16th, 1849. | Richard Blakemore, Esq., M.P., Chairman.' Addressed, with postmarks, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Miss Kinsey | <?> Cottage | Clifton', the address corrected in another hand to 'No 1 Richmond Terrace'. The circular is addressed in manuscript to 'C. Grevil [sic] Esqr. The Revd. Richd. Harington [future principal of Brasenose College, Oxford] & Charles Balfour Esqr.', with 'The Revd W. M. Kinsey' added in pencil. Both documents relate to the issue of new shares as described in Item One above. THREE: Printed 'form of a consent' referred to in Item One above. 1p., 4to. Dated 1849.
