He thanks him for his letter and declines his proposal, explaining that 'circumstances prohibit my accepting your invitation in taking part in your plan, my time at present being to [sic] much taking up'. He continues: 'Here in Norway the literature upon the subject is collected in the 2 essays of me and Waage', i.e. the Norwegian chemist Peter Waage (1833-1900). He gives the details of two essays on chemical affinities, published in 1847 and 1879.
