'Reprinted by Permission' on title-page, and 'First published in the "St James Gazette."' on first page of text, which is headed 'Reminiscences and Reflections | (Revised).' Begins: 'It is my privilege to have been born in Ireland. [...] The lighthouses on the Irish coast - models of cleanliness and good order in a country not famous for either - are known to have been objects of special interest to me.

Now Ready (Sept., 1893.)' and is headed: 'NOTE - This Pamphlet contains the substance of an address to an audience of wealthy people in St. James's Hall, Piccadilly, in the middle of the London Season in the Jubilee year.' Smith's entry in the Oxford DNB explains the background to this pamphlet, explaining that he was 'commissioned to write some articles on biblical subjects for the ninth edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and the first two of these appeared in 1875—‘Angel’ in volume 2 and ‘Bible’ in volume 3. These articles marked a turning point in his career. The Bible was regarded by the Free Church of Scotland as ‘the supreme rule of faith and life’, and so anything that might seem to undermine its authority was bound to arouse opposition.

Covering the last page is an 'Appendix | Scheme of Municipalisation as approved by the Special Committee of the Aberdeen Town Council.' Scarce: no copy of the first edition traced, and the only two copies of the second at Aberdeen University and the LSE.

Of the twelve items (all black and white), the ten small photographs are uniform at 7 x 9 cm; the portrait of Scovell is 21 x 13 cm., and the image of the Spion Kop battlefield 14.5 x 11 cm. Accompanied by a note by Scovell on a slip of paper: 'Relics of the S. African Campaign | 1901-1902 | belonging to G. J. S. S'. The ten small pictures and are in good condition, loose and in an envelope.

Printed on both sides of a 15 x 11 cm piece of card. In good condition, lightly-aged. Unsigned autograph note by Scovell on reverse: 'Drawn up by me when adjt.

Both on 4to biofoliums, and addressed, with postmarks, on the reverse of the second leaf. Both in fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. ONE (22 February 1844): Concerning the unfortunate state of 'the Glasgow congregation' since Harris's removal to Edinburgh. His successor 'Mr. T[aylor].' stated his 'present views' to 'Messrs C<?> & Smith', 'and they said at once he ought to resign the pulpit [...] The end cannot be far off. Mr. T. declared he would not quit the pulpit till he was dragged out of it'. The letter continues with references to 'Mr Taylor' and 'Mr Davidson'.

1p., 4to. On bifolium. Addressed, with broken seal in black wax, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Charles MacIntosh Esqr - &c &c'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. He apologises for being 'unable to attend to pay the usual last Duty to the Remains of your excellent Father & my Friend', but assures MacIntosh that 'no man more sincerely laments his Departure than I do'. He ends in the hope that 'the great & gracious God may sanctify this Dispensation to all concerned'. Signe 'Your much afflicted but very faithful & obedt. Humble Sert. | H: Macleod | College | 29 July 1807'.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper. He thanks him for sending 'Idylls of Spain' (by Rowland Thirlmere, 1897), which 'Mr. Milner' will settle with him for, and states that he is 'interested in the subject and would be glad of a note of any books you happen to come across on this subject'. In 1903 Crockett would publish 'The Adventurer in Spain'.

The game was played on 21 November 1934 at Pittodrie, Scotland winning 3-2. 2pp., 12mo. on two leaves removed from an autograph album. Each team's autographs on a separate page. Addressed (with broken seal in red wax) on reverse of second leaf to 'Archibald Campbell Esq | Army Agent | Regent Street | London'. The letter begins: 'I have just seen a Letter from the Widow of the late Stuart Campbell with a Copy of yours to her, recommending her to try, the effect of circulating Subscription Papers amongst the Friends of her late Husband, and certainly there appears little chance of obtaining any other Relief for her and her destitute Family'.

Page detached from an autograph album, 17.5 x 11cm, good condition. On the recto the autograph signature of Harry Lauder with the trademark sketch of himself with bonnet and pipe. On the verso, the following by Logan "To | Archie | Many Happy memories | of Lauder and | Jimmy Logan [his signature] | Stonehaven | 1987." Note: [Logan] "His one-man musical based on the life of Scottish entertainer Sir Harry Lauder, was called Lauder (1976).[5] Logan collected Lauder memorabilia, which is now housed in the Scottish Theatre Archive at the University of Glasgow.".

[1] + 62pp., folio. On rectos only. Bound with metal studs into yellow card covers, with the spine reinforced with cloth tape. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Loosely inserted is a five-page carbon typescript describing 'Approximate number of costumes necessary'. Also inserted is a typed page beginning with an 'Extract from letter from Sir Donald Wolfit: 8.7.58. | At the moment it looks like an opening date in the second half of September out of London for six or seven weeks first. Mr. Laurence Irving will be in touch with you in the near future for a preliminary discussion'.

144pp., 4to. Stapled into red card wraps, with typed label on cover. A carbon copy with label of the London typing bureau Curtis and Page. The play was published in London by Victor Gollancz in 1941, with a second edition from the same publisher in 1954.

93pp., 4to. Bound with pink ribbon in buff card wraps. Creasing to front cover and first few leaves, otherwise in good condition, on aged paper, in aged and worn wraps. Ownership inscription on front cover and title-page: 'Robins MIllar | 9 Park Quadrant | Glasgow C3'. A high-society comedy, set in London. No record regarding this play has been discovered. Millar's papers are in the University of Glasgow.

107pp., 4to. Stapled and attached with pink ribbon. Aged and worn, with last few leaves detached, with worn front cover only also detached. With a couple of manuscript emendations. Millar begins a full-page introduction: 'The mood of this play is gay comedy. | It arises from the threat of gossip in a small country town.' No record regarding this play has been discovered. Millar's papers are in the University of Glasgow.

For more about Corrie see his entry in the Oxford DNB, which states that 'His most effective mature work, A Master of Men, about the conflict between a mine manager, the mine owners, and the miners, was performed by the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre in 1944.' 111pp., 4to. 2pp., 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with 6cm vertical closed tear to first leaf, affecting a couple of words. The reverse of the second leaf carries a broken seal in black wax, and is addressed to Clanricarde. The letter begins: 'My dear Ld C: | We are in a great difficulty at the H. of Lords today for want of a third Peer.' He will esteem it a great favour if Clanricarde 'will come at ten and enable me to go on with the Causes - for otherwise there will be the whole expence thrown upon the packs'.

148pp., small 4to. In contemporary red leather half bindings with marbled boards and edges and gilt tooling. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in lightly aged and worn binding. Signed on reverse of front free endpaper: 'J. Borthwick | 1820', and on the page facing this: 'General Account | book. | N.B. The Vouchers are tied up with Labels marked for the respective years. 1p., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly-aged, and laid down on a piece of card. Reads: 'July 26 | My dear Faed, | Would you mind seconding me at the Athenaeum? I believe Tom Hughes has put down my name. | Yours faithfully | William Black.' According to Black's entry in the Oxford DNB, he 'studied landscape painting for a short time in the Glasgow School of Art, but, becoming connected with the Glasgow Citizen, gradually exchanged art for journalism'.

8vo. 310pp. Red cloth, gilt extra, with ornate design to front board and spine. First edition with King's illustrations. A good copy of an extremely attractive book, in binding with light fading in parts, but gilt still bright, and with the merest wear at head of spine. Bookplate by Isabel Bonus for Annie C. Dolamore. Collated and complete. All of King's ninety-five illustrations are present, with twenty-four of them, including the frontispiece, on shiny art paper. A sumptuous item, produced at the high point of King's Art Nouveau period.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly-aged and spotted, with minor traces of glue from mount on reverse. Reads: 'With the Compliments of the Season to all | from | Thomas Faed | 25 Der. 1881'. For information on Faed, see his entry in the Oxford DNB.

1p., 12mo. Nicely printed on one side of a piece of laid watermarked paper. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight loss to one corner caused by removal from an album. Sixteen-line poem in four four-line stanzas. Signed in type at foot 'TOM FAED.' The poem is a lament by the betrothed of a sailor drowned in the Firth of Forth. The first stanza reads: 'Oh wae is me!
