[Frederick Verney; Siam; Thailand] Autograph Letter Signed Frederick Verney praising Morant for his [educational] work in Siam (see Note below]. to Hugh Low, colonial administrator and naturalist .
ALS, 3pp. in a generous hand, good condition. I am very glad to hear that you have asked Morant to lunch with you. I merely wish to tell you what probably you know already, that he is one of thebest Englishmen that ever set foot in Siam. He is thoroughly straight, and yet has tact & infinite patience. His position in Siam, gained entirely by his own merits, is very influential, and his influence is invariably exercised in the right direction. I am very glad indeed that you & he sh[ou]d meet. Text: Note: In November 1886 he went to Siam as tutor to King Chulalongkorn's nephews, and subsequently became tutor to the Crown Prince and laid the foundations of a system of public education in Siam which is still associated with his name. He exercised great and independent influence and became the object of much jealousy, which led to his retirement from the Siamese service in 1894. [DNB]
