Joll was a Professor of History who found fame by giving the spy Anthony Blunt shelter when he was exposed. The areas of the map itself are intact and clear, but the four corners, each containing blocks of text, have suffered loss, previous to the addition of a modern cloth backing. The first three words of the title ('Nouveau Plan Routier') have suffered loss. The 'AVERTISSMENTS' by 'Le Sr. Nolin' is intact. Nolin the younger produced three edtions of his important map, in 1744, 1751 et 1761, each with significant variations.
