The Poetry of Love from the most celebrated authors with Several Original Pieces
xvi.208pp., 16mo, one foxed plate, very attractive red leather, gilt decorated binding, corners bumped, 2 or 3 small spot, aeg. Conclusion of Preface, "The Editor would take this opportunity of acknowledging the kindness of those of his poet-friends who have furnished him with pieces hitherto unpublished; and forming not the least attractive feature of the present selection. | Bedford | Feb.19th, 1842". Poets include Wordsworth, LEL, Felicia Hemans, etc, etc.ViaLibri site ascribes the one copy (but published by T. Wardle, [Phildelphia] 1852), apparently held by Amazon (!) they list to Rufus Wilmot Griswold, the American anthologist. Their information may be derived from entries on WorldCat who list several editions, all of which WorldCat or its sources attribute to Griswold without caveat (Darton 1840; Anners of Philadelphia 1849; T. Wardle of Philadelphia 1844 (copies in 5 US libraries); Zell of Philadelphia 1864 (copy at Brown Univ.). If the "Darton" copy is the same edition as mine no editor is named. Only one book with this title is listed on COPAC, no author or publisher given, '(1842)', copy at Oxford, the Bodleian Catalogue adding no information about publisher but reiterating height of book, 11cm (my copy more like 12cm). Recalling that the publisher is London-based and the Preface is addressed from Bedford, an English anthologist/editor is more likely to be involved, but obviously more work is required into questions of precedence and authorship, and which poems were first published in this volume.
