Metcalf, also a major Collector of Steiniana: Three Autograph Letters and Three Typed Letters Signed with full name, "Addison" only, or humorously ("Baron de Thou" etc) or is it "camply", to Finley, 6 Sept. 1957- [c.6 Nov. 1962 from postmark), with original envelopes, headed "Addison M. Metcalf's Collection of Gertrude Steiniana", total 7pp., 4to. (1) He's found a copy of "my Gertrude Stein publication" which he'll send because "I believe you have the beginnings and workings of what promises to be a real fine Collection of her works." He mentions an enclosure no longer present, and asks for a list of what Finley has already. He'll keep him posted on what he's offered. "I do not believe in making profits. My one interest is to further the interest of Gertrude Stein." He offers four titles, and invites him to see his collection. (2) 13 Sept. 1957. He's effusive in thanks for Finley's ("dear boy") essay on GS. "It has been with the greatest pleasure that I read your Essay. You make it all so easy!" He discusses the NY production of "Dr Faustus", 1954-5 (3)18 Sept. 1957. He expresses pleasure at meeting, discusses "Kisses Can", edition of 48 copies about which he had enclosed details on a separate card beginning "The first edition . . . has been made possible through the kindness of Carl van Vechten". He makes a present of another work, asking for something else. He comments on works and asks for information. He discusses the photograph of GS he has enclosed (present) in which GS is framed by two plates "designed by Gertrude for Carl van Vechten." Envelope annotated by Finley (4) 25 Jan. 1958. He asks Finley's opinion of the GS bookplate he uses (one present), and if he had finished Photostats he had lent him. He discusses the exhibition he arranged recently "Gertrude Stein and the Theatre". He has made arrangements to give his collection to Scripps College, Claremont, "a College exclusively for WOMEN". The collection "will be arranged so that it will look like Gertrude's Studio at '27' rue Fleurus". He discusses his continuing passion for collecting GS (6) [6 Nov.1962] He thanks Finley for letting him see his GS collection, and praises it. He finds that some fellow-collectors "like to keep their discoveries to themselves", but he and Finley like sharing information. "How very like Carl Van Vechten not to mention you to me. The only Stein collector I know through him is a rare bird in Connecticut who collects even matchbooks with pictures of beer steins on them." He discusses a recent exhibition, and encloses a copy of the programme (not present) understanding that if Van Vechten has already given him a copy, he as a collector would like two anyway. He recommends a book edited by Edith Sitwell and an article by Art Buchwald.(2) He discusses Van Vechten's "Sacred and Profane Memories" ("charm", "nostalgic"). He is enclosing a "brochure", a bookseller's catalogue which has Stein items "at outrageous prices" which he exemplifies (catalogue present). He tells an anecdote about Addison Metcalf, sending cookies to Yale "for the colletion (this was before his break with them)." They arrived when Gallup was absent so the secretary put them in the archives where they were found mouldering six months later. "His flowers of friendship and mine have not faded ye (I've never met him, which may be to my advantage) though I must say they're a bit tattered round the edges." He discusses "Miss T's autobiography of Gertrude Stein which he doubts "will ever see the printer's office". The story involves "Alice and a tape recorder". With: two Typed Notes Signed "Warren Tracy", Librarian at Coe College, March 1959, to Finley suggesting he contact Bruce Kellner, among other things.D. Three Typed Letters Signed "Donald Gallup", bibliographer, Yale University Library, to Finley [sic], 17 Feb. 1958-20 Jan. 1959.
