'I have just come back from seeing Winifred Holtby in the nursing home where she is lying ill, & I fear there is no hope whatever for her. Her friends are very anxious that she shd. be adequately written about in the News Chronicle when the time […] & have asked me to ask you to see, if you wd. be so very good, that she is not summed up by just any reporter, or anyone who does not know her personality & her work - her work which still promised more than it achieved, I know - but I am certain she would have done great things if she cd have had time [...] Vera Brittain & one or two others begged me to write to you - & so I do [...] I am so desperately sad about Winifred that I don't know what I am writing'.
