The solicitors write that they received that morning 'your letter requesting us to make enquiry as to the character of P. White from Gate Wharf Paddington, which we have since done and have learned from several respectable individuals at Paddington that he is a regular swindler, and having been detected in several swindling transactions White has not been seen in the neighbourhood for a week past, it is therefore fortunate that the Slates are not sent off.'
