Thre Autograph Letters Signed "J.M. Murry" and "j. Middleton Murry", critic and editor, to Robert Lynd, essayist.
3 ALsS, on letterhead of The Athenaeum journal, 12 March 1919; 102 Edith Grove, Chelsea, 16 July [no year]; on letterhead of 5 Acacia Road, St John's Wood, 'Sunday' [no date], total 5pp., 8vo and 12mo.First, he begins: 'You know I've been put in charge of this. Probably you were responsible for the job being offered me - at least I don't know who was, if it wasn't you. | I hope you will be able to write for us.' Postscript reads: 'As for Bertrand Russell, I haven't read the book. But I warn you that it is difficult for me to be humourous at any time, and impossible in this case. B. R. is a friend of mine, and I know that his book is meant seriously. I should therefore be under the obligation to take it seriously. Therefore, I think it would probably be better if it went elsewhere.' Second, his 'notice of the French' is not very good (he regrets his 'attempt to review it with one eye on the D[aily]. N[ews]. public'), but RL can use it if he wishes, 'for I should like to be the first to notice this man's work in England. Mere pride!' Third, he asks RL to send him 'a decent book or books - if a couple of good novels happen to be there they would suit me splendidly. But please send me something not abosolutely bétifiant [sic] - or I shall die for lack of holiday.'
