Galley Proofs of additional Shelleyana intended for and included in A Shelley Library (1924), 9pp., 51 x 21cm, good condition. It was published in the same year as Ashley Library, vol.5. Collins, Two Forgers, p.225, states that A Shelley Library and 1925’s A Swinburne Library ‘were simply reprinted sections from Ashley, pasted up in a different form with a few corrections’, which appears, in the light of these proofs and galleys to be understatement. The present galleys consist of entries for items present in other volumes of the Ashley Library, not vol. 5 – Shelleyana, but originally entered under another author (for example, entries for the Leigh Hunt items in the galleys can be found under his name in vol.2 of the Ashley Library). None of the material in the galleys is present in Ashley Library, vol.5. The galleys commence with five of Clara Claremont’s ‘lurid’ diaries acquired by Wise from fellow-forger Harry Buxton (Two Forgers, p.111), deriving from Ashley Library, vol. 1, pp.187-188.The outstanding difference between the galleys and the published work is the order of the entries. For example, the Jane Clairmont material stays together but the Clairmont item in the galleys discussing the death of Shelley is placed among related items in the proofs/book. Other entries are scattered between pp.87 and 159 in the published work. There are many, often substantial differences between the entries in the Ashley Library and the galleys (and the page proofs described above).Further Notes on the transition from Galleys to Page Proofs of A Shelley Library:i. Changes in the form induced by adjustments and editing. For example, first line of first item in Shelley Library, p.102 ends "The original ", in galleys, The original holo-".ii. Errors corrected, marked or not.iii. Errors not corrected and perpetuated (unless [sic] was intended or required). For example, ‘baloon’ and ‘medecine’(galleys, p.4, book, p.103) and ‘Prolouge’ (galleys, p.5. book, p.95 ).I have found all the items listed in the galleys in the index to the Ashley Library, except To A Skylark (Shelley) Cantata (galleys, p.7). COPAC dates this "[1923?]" which suggests a recent purchase and opens the question of the tinkering or changes wrought by Wise’s buying habits.
