See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. Thirty-five lines of neatly-written text. Signed ‘James Martineau’ and addressed to ‘Mr F. Parnall’. He congratulates him ‘on obtaining a place in the Honours Division’, explaining that it will ‘remain entirely with’ himself ‘to select the optional books for the October Examination’. They ‘have no wish to modify any choice which you may make, in accordance with the terms of the Regulations’. He explains that the examination will probably be conducted by his colleagues, ‘as my duties do not commence till a little after the opening of the Session’. ‘Dr Drummond’ - i.e. the theologian James Drummond (1835-1918), for whom see the Oxford DNB - will be acting for Martineau, ‘And it will be as well for you, - a week or ten days before the time, - to write to him your final selection of books, and asking him about any matters on which you may be in doubt.’ He continues with information about the ‘further examination’ and in a postscript gives Drummond’s address in Hampstead.
