M.P. for Thirsk, d. 1831. Document A, two page, 4to, chipped, one hole, with marginal textual loss, headed "York Courant / Tuesday Aug. 23d 1785 / City of York", measures taken against "Highwaymen, Housebreakers, Pickpockets, Horse--stealers, Common Thieve, Cheats, Sharpers, and other offenders with their confederates, resort topublic places & Fairs to meet their accomplices, & perpetrate their villainies . . ." described (presumably in the newspaper in the heading) by "Geo. Townend / Common Clerk". The measures include the activation of the Vagrant Act in York City and County, bailiffs, constables, etc to be "vigilant in searching for & apprehending all Alms-gatherers, Beggars, Petty Chapmen & Pedlars . . . Fencers, Bearwards, Jugglers, Fortune-Tellers . . . Rogues, Vagabonds, Vagrants . . ." Document B, two pages, 4to, good condition,initialled "T.F.", headed "On the Dodsworth's Veracity", describing the poaching activities of two young men with ferrets and a terrier. The father offered to be bound "in any sum for his sons never again setting foot in the plantation" but his word can't be trusted. Any further crime will be pursued to the full force of the Law.
