File of papers giving insight inot the buying and record-making procedures of an antiquary and collector.They are crudely sewn together, with some damage and staining, texts clear and complete except railway receipt (trimmed), collection comprising: a. Catalogue ("Part Fifty-Three", Feb. 1860, from Thomas Arthur, 45 Booksellers' Row, Strand, London, W.C. ( some items ticked by Sumner, including item 454 Ratsall's History of . . . .Southwell" which is also marked "Ordered"). b. Invoice from Thomas Arthur, 13 Feb. 1860 for Ratstall's "Southwell", with a note added and signed by Sumner about his sending a "Post Office Order" in payment. c. Notification of readiness for collection from the Railway Station of the parcel, Beverley, 16 Feb. 1860. d. Label from parcel with addresses of Sumner and Arthur with a note signed by Sumner about payment of carriage. e. Envelope addressed to Sumner by Arthur, docketed to that effect by Sumner including date 20 Feb. 1860. g. Autograph Note from Arthur (from above envelope) acknowledging receipt of the PO Order. Note: a. [Internet site] "In October of this year was held the great sale of the antiquarian collection of Mr. Gillyatt Sumner, then recently deceased. For the interest of the local manuscripts and deeds, many of which were of the greatest rarity, then brought to the hammer, this sale was scarcely surpassed by that of the famous Burton Constable archives. Mr. Sumner's collection realized upwards of £2,500." b. There is no catalogue of Thomas Arthur in the BL. collections.
