Autograph Note Signed to an unnamed correspondent, in French.
One page, 8vo, fold mark, good condition. "Je m'empresse de vous adresser épreuve de votre [premier] Eclaircissement . | L'ouvrage sera tiré in folio et ce que je vous envoie est ce qu'on appelle 'une composition perdue' d'apres laquelle on imprimera Le texte definitif en plus grand format. | Veuillez me renvoyer 8 rue Vaum . . ." This letter is enclosed ina folio leaf, the recto of which has a decorative design (three sections of varying sizes) allowing an autograph-collector to categorise his acquisitions (this one is headed "Savants") and to give information about the letter (ironically another letter from Gautier is described not this one) and the letter-writer, in this case extending to the verso. Note: Gautier, literary historian who revived an interest in early French literature with his translation and critical discussion of the Chanson de Roland (1872) and with his research on the chansons de geste. In Paris in 1859, Gautier became keeper of the imperial archives and of the archives of the département of Haute-Marne. In 1871 he became professor of paleography. He published several works in 1868-9, none of which are listed in BnF as folio.
