4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. An interesting survival (no copies traced on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat), indicating that British party politics was not entirely suspended during the 'Phoney War'. The pamphlet gives no indication that it is directly issued by the Conservative and Unionist Party, but see the quotation from Chamberlain below. The front cover reads: 'Politics in War Time. | What the Opposition Leaders are Working for To-day | Increased Membership of the Socialist Party | Maintenance of the Liberal Faith | International Socialism | The Socialist Party as alternative to the National Government | See Inside'. The middle two pages are headed: 'ARE PARTY POLITICS DEAD? | The following extracts show that the Socialists and the other Opposition Parties have not abandoned their pre-war policies, but are determined to keep their organisations alive and active: -'. Dated quotations follow from: Mr. C. R. Attlee, M.P.; Mr. Arthur Greenwood, M.P.; Mr. G. R. Shepherd; Mr. Herbert Morrison, M.P.; Mrs. Barbara Ayrton Gould; Mr. Hugh Dalton, M.P.; National Executive of Socialist Party; National Committee of Constituency Socialist Parties; "Labour Press Service"; "Daily Herald"; Lord Meston; "Daily Worker". The back page gives 'The Conservative View', as put by party chairman the Rt Hon. Sir Douglas Hacking, under three headings: 'Only One Cause' ('"Mr. Chamberlain authorises me to say that it is not his desire that the organisation of the Party should be used during the war either directly or indirectly for the advancement of any cause but that of defeating the enemy."'), 'In the National Interest' and 'Maintain Efficiency'.
