[ Ethel G. Hayler, Children's Librarian, Croydon Public Libraries. ] Printed pamphlet: 'American Children's Libraries. A Report to the Croydon Public Libraries Committee on a Personal Visit to America August and September, 1927.'
12pp., 8vo. Stapled. In green printed wraps. In good condition, on aged paper, with slight wear to one corner and a few light marks to cover. Full-page introduction by Pelton, followed by the ten-page report, dated 'January, 1928', divided into the following sections: The itinerary; Publicity; Buildings and Arrangements of Children's Rooms; The Staff; Circulation of Books; Fines; Classification; Cataloguing; Hours of Opening; School Libraries; Collections of Illustrations; Book Selection; Story Hours; Talks or Lectures; Work with Older Boys and Girls; Parents' and Teachers' Room; Magazines; Tiny Tots; Book Lists; Miscellaneous Matters; Conclusion. Hayter's conclusion is that, despite the fact that 'we in England have fewer advantages in the way of buildings, equipment and staff', yet '[o]ur system of allowing the children themselves to take their share in the work of their own library is quite different from anything I saw in America, and an extremely excellent way of getting into close touch with them'. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC at the British Library.
