Begins: 'As the result of a recent informal Conference in London, on the part of a number of leading Iron and Steel Makers, regarding the above-named Bill, I was requested to convene a General Meeting of the Iron and Steel Trades of Great Britain, to be held in London in the week ending May 12, 1906 (Iron and Steel Institute week), for the purpose of considering the action to be taken in connection with the matter.' THREE: Printed circular. 2pp., folio. First page headed: 'A meeting of Iron and Steel Makers from all the districts of Great Britain, convened by Mr. J. R. Winpenny of Middlesborough, Secretary of the North of England Iron and Steel Manufacturers Association and the Steel Ingot Makers Association, was held at the Westminster Palace Hotel, London, on Thursday, May 10th, 1906.' The first page carries the names of individuals attending on behalf of 63 firms, beginning with 'Geo. Ainsworth Consett Iron Co., Ld. Conseet' and ending with 'Wm. Wylie Wylie & Co. Coatbridge'. The second page reports on the meeting and quotes a resolution. FOUR: Printed circular by 'J. R. WINPENNY, | SECRETARY pro tem.' of the Iron, Steel and Allied Trades Empoloyers' Federation of Great Britain. Royal Exchange, Middlesborough, 28 February 1907. 1p., 4to. Begins: 'The Provisional Committee appointed at the meeting of representatives of the Iron, Steel and Allied Trades held at the Westminster Palace Hotel, London, in May last, have arrived at the stage for submitting to a further meeting the result of their proceedings.' Discusses 'some misapprehension regarding the financial responsibilities that affiliation with the Federation will involve'. With pencil notes, including 'Mr. Whale says | "No Action" | (File)'. With envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to 'Messrs L. & N. Y. [sic] Railway Co. | (Steel Dept.) | Crewe'. FIVE: Carbon copy of note to K. Macrae from 'A. R. <?>'. On London & North Western Railway Locomotive Department letterhead, Crewe, 4 May 1906. Asking for a copy of the proposed bill to be sent, so that the firm can 'look into the matter, and see whether it affects us in any way'. SIX: Manuscript note to Whale, signed by C. de J. Andrewes. On letterhead of the London & North Western Railway, Solicitor's Office, Westminster. 7 May 1906. Forwarding 'a print of this Bill, which however was dropped on Second Reading and will not therefore be proceeded further with this Session'. SEVEN: Typed copy of letter from Whale to Winpenny. 8 May 1906. As 'the Bill was dropped on second reading', his company will not be represented at the meeting on 10 May.
