[John Bellows [John Thomas Bellows], Gloucester printer, lexicographer and archaeologist.] Two Autograph Letters Signed [to Tom Taylor], the first regarding corrections to one of his dictionaries by the recipient's daughter, the second about 'Punch'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. From the papers of the playwright Tom Taylor, who was editor of Punch at the time these letters were written. Both 16mo bifoliums, on uniform grey paper. Both addressed to ‘Dear friend’ and signed ‘John Bellows’. Both in good condition, lightly aged, and each folded once for postage. The second with a spatter of ink at one corner (not affecting the text). From the papers of Tom Taylor, who was editor of Punch at the time. ONE (‘6mo. 13. 1877’): 1p, 16mo. He is ‘much obliged’ to the recipient’s daughter for ‘noting my omission of sursis. It is the law-term for “delay” (from the verb surseoir.) / If she wont mind the trouble of noting any other omissions she may notice in her reading, of words that ought to be found in a pocket Dictionary (as this unquestionably should have been - for it is in common use) I should be still more obliged, for it is by such help alone that I can hope to bring my little book to reasonable perfection’. TWO (‘6mo 16. 1877’): 1p, 16mo. Begins: ‘In one of the letters I am often exchanging with my colleague Professor [Beljame?] of Paris, there is a little friendly criticism on something in Punch, which I enclose. How he got the idea that I knew thee personally, I can’t imagine: but I take advantage of having once had a pleasant hour of thy company to take the liberty.’ He ends in the hope that something will ‘bring thee again to Gloucester’.
