4to. 36 leaves and 18 engravings. Bound in plain and worn black cloth, with remains of two ribbon strips on back board. Some of the plates are heavily foxed, but otherwise the volume is in very good condition. Examples of the two attractive alternative decorated bindings are attached to the front and rear endpapers. Over the front pastedown is laid an example of the front board of the dark blue cloth binding of the six-volume edition, heavily decorated in gilt with masonic insignia (all-seeing eye, chain of office, dividers, etc.) inside a decorative gilt border containing other insignia. Next to this, on the front free endpaper, is laid down an example of the spine to the same binding, with a gilt pattern of acorns and insignia above and below the title. Over the rear pastedown is an example of the front board of the binding of the three-volume edition, with the same pattern as the other minus the border, and half-bound in black half-morocco. The rear free endpaper has an example of the leather spine to this binding: an expanded and slightly more ornate version of the pattern of the other. The volume begins with an addenda slip and 2 leaves, including order form, of prospectus for this 'New Edition'. The volume also contains: the duotone title-leaf to volume I; leaves with the contents and illustrations to vols I to III; eight engravings; 10 colour engravings with leaves of accompanying text on subjects such as 'MASONIC CLOTHING AND REGALIA', 'THE GRAND LODGE OF NORWAY' and ' "THE GRAND ORIENT NACIONAL OF SPAIN" '; 4 leaves containing chapter I (pp.1-8); 1 leaf containing the start of chapter XXI (pp.1-2); 1 leaf with pp.47-8 of chapter XXIII; 1 leaf (pp.29-30); 2 leaves of 'APPENDIX' (pp.471-4); and the 'GENERAL INDEX' (pp.489-502). The volume ends with 4 leaves, ruled with printed blue lines, each headed 'Subscribers' Signatures' ('No Subscriber's Name received for less than the Entire Work.'). Sadly no names have been entered.
