Three pages, 12mo. Very good. The blank verso of the second leaf of the bifolium laid down on remains of leaf detached from autograph album. Begins 'At length by certain Proofs 'tis plain (to quote a hymn familiar to my childhood but forgotten now all but that first line) that the readers of Macmillan will know all that is to be known about the mistletoe, thanks to your labours, before Christmas.' He hopes she has received the proofs, and says that 'Grove, the Editor, writes to me that they are in type & he is forwarding them to Ickleton'. 'Grove' is Sir George Grove (1820-1900), editor of Macmillan's Magazine between 1868 and 1883. Quotes short passage from Grove declining another piece, 'The Sword'. He has asked Grove the name of the present editor of the Cornhill Magazine ('It used to be Leslie Stephen, and I know him or did know him well enough at Cambridge.'). 'Bell the publisher will be looking in upon us next week for a day or two, and I dare say he will [be] able to suggest something.' In the meantime Calverley will 'keep the MS in my Custody'. In a postscript Calverley expresses his disappointment that the two pieces could not be placed together: 'I thought the Sword was the better of the two and had no doubt as to its acceptance. [...] Grove says that he and all Editors are in a hideous stateof overworkedness in the last /and the next/ few months [...]'.
