He begins by acknowledging Armstrong's letter: 'I assure your Committee that I appreciate the honour they do me by asking me to become a Vice-President of the Golders Green Literary Society.' He has for some time felt that in the interest of his health he must 'enter no fresh engagements for a while', and therefore does not feel 'able to accept even this one, which I am sure would be pleasanter than most'. He ends by offering his 'sincere regrets'.
