The letter begins: 'Dr. Reed in his letter dated July 30th has truly stated that both in my Reports and in private conversation I have borne testimony to the great usefulness of the Fever Hospital or "House of Recovery" at Monsall. [...] He states that out of 151 patients sent to the Hospital by the Corporation of Manchester 16 only were under six years of age, that since it was opened on June 10th 1871 the Corporation have sent 519 cases and that in all 1046 cases have been admitted.' Leigh concludes that there would be 'very little difficulty would be experienced in persuading the mother of the little sufferers to allow their children to be removed to a hospital near to their own homes, one of a home-like character, within easy reach of enquiry and from which speedy information of a child's critical condition could be conveyed.'
