Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. ONE: 'Plan for obtaining the Maximum and Detailed Information about the Enemy.' Headed 'MOST SECRET'. 2pp., 8vo. On two leaves stapled together. With illegible facsimile signature of author at end: ' Capt', followed by typed 'GSO.3(I) | 6 Armd Div. | IN THE FIELD | 25 Mar 43.' Copy numbered '9' in manuscript. Divided into three sections: 'Appreciation of Type of Operation likely to be carried out by an Armd Div.', 'Method' and 'Security'. Begins: 'Now that the preliminaries have been carried out in the TUNISIAN Campaign and a mobile reserve is being formed for an attack on Axis forces, the system of Intelligence in the Armoured Division must be changed from that used in the semi-static operations which have taken place to date.' The last section points out the inevitability 'that the t[roo]ps will get wind of' such an operation. 'As much as can safely be told [to] the men about the pending operations will be, but every unit will see that all the men are given a talk on "the importance of keeping such information secret". It will be the duty of the FS Sec to prevent any leakage of information. Extra active precautions will be put into operation by the F.S.O. w.e.f. a date to be named by Div HQ.' TWO: 'Intelligence at an Armd Div H.Q.' Headed 'SECRET'. 3pp., 8vo. On three leaves stapled together. Anonymous and without place or date. Divided into twelve sections: 'Introduction', 'Speed and depth of Adv.', 'R/T Reports', 'Working on the move', 'Intelligence Training', 'G.S.O.3(I)', 'The Divisional I.O', 'Intelligence Offrs', 'Interrogation of PsW', 'Estimate of Enemy Equipment destroyed or captured', 'Field Security Sections', 'Visits by GS(I) from higher Formations'. Both items scarce: no other copy of either traced (neither of them in the Imperial War Museum Collection). Among material assembled by the military historian Barrie Pitt while writing his 'Crucible of War' series on the Desert War.
