[Braes of Lorn, Argyllshire.] Manuscript 'D[ra]ft. Regulations for Braes of Lorn', regarding the duties of tenants.

From the papers of John Campbell, 4th Earl and 1st Marquess of Breadalbane. Without place or date [Lorn, Agyllshire? Circa 1817.] On paper watermarked 'C WILMOTT | 1817'. 3pp., foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. 69 lines of neatly-written text, with three minor corrections. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. No clue to the identity of the author, or time and place of writing, but from the papers of the 1st Marquess of Breadalbane. Headed 'Dft. Regulations for Braes of Lorn', the document begins: 'No more than two corn or white Crops to be taken of any part of the Lands in closs [sic] Succession without green Crop or three years Lea intervening, and no more ground to be ploughed during the last three years than during the average of the five preceding years, [inserted here: 'of the Leave'] and any land occupied as a Park to be on no account under tillage at removal. - The whole Crops of Oats Barley Potatoes and first cutting or one year old. Sown grass to be left properly fenced at the Tenants removal when it will be under the charge of his Successor who will receive the same from the outgoing tenant at a value to be fixed by the Bisleymen of the Estate and payable at the term of Candlemass thereafter'. Second paragraph begins: 'Such Houses, Sheep Reeves, Tup Parks, dykes and other fences already under comprisement on the Lands as the Proprietor or those authorized by him may consider of benefit to the farm are to be upheld with any new erections thereon and left by the Tenant at his removal in good tenantable and fencible condition'.
