Chenevix-Trench’s entry in the Oxford DNB discusses his achievements, as well as his ‘unhealthy addiction to corporal punishment, a trait later exposed by one of his former pupils, Paul Foot, in the satirical magazine Private Eye’. At least one of his former pupils (Nicholas Fraser) alleges that he was abused by him. The recipient Philip Dosse was the proprietor of Books and Bookmen and other magazines devoted to the arts. 1p, 8vo. Signed ‘Anthony Chenevix Trench [no hyphen] / M.A. J.P. F.R.S.A.’ He encloses a ‘[cuchshy?] review of [his father] Charles C-T’s “History of marksmanship’, apologising for his ‘amateur typing – (Secretary temporarily hors de combat)’, and asks Dosse to ‘emend as you please, and if it isn’t long/good enough, ‘tear it over’ and reject. I hope it isn’t too late! I’ve been up to my ears lately with the job and starting a book of my own.’ Concludes: ‘It really is a first rate production!’
