[Methuen & Co., London publishers.] Eight in-house publicity items and a trade catalogue, comprising: two issues of the firm's 'Book Gazette & Notes on Books'; six issues of its 'Monthly Bulletin'; and 'A Complete and Illustrated Catalogue of Books'.
The collection in fair condition, on aged and worn paper. The catalogue stitched and in wraps; the other eight items with rusted staples, and unbound. Items One and Two: Copies of the 'Book Gazette' (both 32pp., small 4to), numbered 8 (October 1896) and 16 (September 1901), and containing Announcements, Literary Notes, and extracts from publications. Items Three to Eight: Six copies of 'Methuen's Monthly Bulletin'. All 8vo, and ranging in length from 20 to 32pp. The earliest of the six (July 1904) with announcement on front cover: 'Messrs. METHUEN will be very glad to receive the names and addresses of all those who would like to have their MONTHLY BULLETIN from time to time. | Their new books are described in this publication, but the public is advised to ask to see such books at the booksellers'. Messrs. Methuen's new volumes are to be seen at nearly all good bookshops, and of the more important ones prospectuses can be obtained from the publishers or the booksellers.' The 'Bulletins' would appear to be a continuation of 'Gazette', with 'Notes on Books', 'Recent Publications' and 'Extracts' from publications. Item Nine: 1929 'Complete and Illustrated Catalogue'. 280pp., 8vo. In printed wraps; with slip stating that 'A Supplement commencing on page 213 contains all Books published between July 1927 and December 1928.' With four pages of plates, including 24 publicity photographs of the firm's authors. Well laid out, with extensive indexes of titles and subjects. No copies of 'Methuen's Monthly Bulletin' traced; the only copies of the 'Book Gazette' traced at the British Library; and no copies of the 1929 catalogue traced in English-speaking libraries.
