[ Bertram Park, London society photographer. ] Negatives of photographs of King Edward VIII (in highland dress) and King George VI as Prince Albert, Duke of York.
Neither image is present in the National Portrait Gallery collection. The two items are from the papers of royal photographer Marcus Adams (1875-1959), with whom Park shared premises (as well as facilities and staff) at 43 Dover Street, Mayfair. Each is in its own envelope, and the two are loosely inserted in a stylish brown patterned cloth 32 x 24 cm folder, with Park's stamp in gilt on cover and his bookplate inside the front cover. The negatives are in good condition, in aged envelopes and folder. ONE: 21 x 16 cm negative of portrait of King Edward in highland dress, bareheaded, with plumed hat under one arm, and the hand of the other arm on the hilt of a sword. A similar image, taken at the same sitting from a slightly different angle is known, and he National Portrait Gallery has a different image of the King in highland dress, dated to 26 June 1931. In brown paper envelope on which Park has written in pencil: 'H M the King | 056966'. TWO: 16 x 11.5 cm negative of Albert, Duke of York (the future King George VI). A head and shoulders shot, with the prince, dressed in lounge suit and tie, looking complacently into the camera. Facsimile signature of the Duke in bottom left-hand corner: 'Albert' (or right-hand corner if reversed!). In brown paper envelope on which Park has written in pencil: 'Negative for portrait H R H Duke of York'. A similar image, probably from the same sitting, is dated 1926.
