[ John Adolphus, historian. ] Autograph Letter Signed
2pp., 4to. Bifolium. In good condtion, lightly aged. Addressed, with postmark, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Saml. Egerton Brydges Esqr. | Denton | Canterbury'. Concerning his change of the plan he told 'Mr. Lodge' regarding his intention to visit Brydges at Denton: 'I go to Canterbury merely to attend the sessions, and am very lame'. If Brydges is in Canterbury, Adolphus would be happy to see him 'at the house of Mr. George Plomer (late Mr Warley's) in the High Street'. He concludes: 'I am the more anxious to have the pleasure of meeting you, as I felt very much flattered by your wish to be acquainted with me, some time ago, and have much regretted that I could not find opportunity to give it more complete effect'. According to Brydges's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'After living briefly in London he bought and restored at great expense Denton Court, near his birthplace, to which he retired in 1792 to devote himself to literature and genealogy.' In 1810 he 'moved to Lee Priory, Ickham, near Canterbury, the residence of his eldest son', where in 1813 he established the celebrated press.
