[ Emerson Tennent, politician, colonial administrator and Governor of Ceylon. ] Autograph Letter Signed ('J. Emerson Tennent'), describing his family's connection with Methodism, and his desire to attend a Methodist meeting in London.
2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. He has asked his friend 'Mr Reilly' to assure the recipient that he will be with him on the arranged date. 'Independently of my personal interewst in Methodism from the fact of my family having been for 35 years < full?> in connexion with that body, I take as a Christian, an extended interest in the success of your mission, one of the most valuable, I believe, in existence'. After attending a public meeting in Belfast, he will travel 'the same night to Liverpool' and then to London. 'I must travel, which I am now unwilling to do, by the Railroad on Sabbath night. By this means I must please God to be with you.' Should he be prevented from attending, 'be assured of my most ardent good wishes: and at all times, when my exertions, or presence can be of use I shall be but too happy, to have them called for by you, or the friends of Methodism'.
