Quaker confectioner, social reformer and philanthropist (1839-1922). 1 page, 8vo. A little grubby and creased but in good condition overall, with the blank reverse attached to remains of another piece of paper. He thanks his correspondent for his letter and states that 'The Friends' Meeting House at Stirchley has been used for very many years by the Friendly Societies instead of the liquor shop. I believe that one society of 700 members [manuscript addition: 'the largest branch in the Midlands'] and another of 400 members have payments made in one of the rooms connected with it. Surely our churches all over the country might do the same. It would be practical religion that would save probably hundreds of thousands of pounds for the little children that would be spent in paying "wet" rent instead of going home for food and clothing for them. I sometimes marvel at the lack of practical christianity in our churches. The Friends' Meeting House at Selly Oak or the rooms connected with it is likewise used for a similar purpose. | You are at liberty to use the illustrations, but I would rather my name was not mentioned.'
