Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent.

Author/translator of "La Muse ottomane ou chefs-d'oeuvre de la poésie turque" (Paris, 1853). Three pages, 8vo, good condition. He thanks his correspondent for a copy of "l'Anthologie arabe de M. Grangeret de Lagrange" [first published 1828]. He explains his great interest in the book and the excellent job done by the compiler. He praises his correspondent for enriching the book with Latin and notes which derive from their discussions. He says that the anthology of Lagrange was published ten years after one published by his correspondent [not known] "et cependant la votre (compliment a part) me parait plus complete et plus instructive". He explains why he thinks this, and concludes by saying tha he will use some of his material in his "Muse Ottomanes" [obviously a work in progress not published until 1853]. "Cette publication [Muse Ottomane] est maintenant ce qui m'occupe a peu pres exclusivement, et je veux faire en sorte qu'elle sorte qu'elle se termine dams le courant de cette annee. Le parti que j'ai pris de traduire en vers les morceaux de poesie turque que doit contenir mon recueil, m'impose necessairement un surcroit [?] de travail, mais je tiens a prouver que, comme le dit Virgile: Labor omnia vincit / Improbus." He goes on with compliments about his correspondent's book in preparation on the language of the people of Geneva. Family news, etc. Servan de Sugny was a pioneer in introducing Turkish poetry to a western audience.
