Landscape 8vo: 10 pp. On the first six leaves of a twenty leaf stitched account book, on blue ruled blue paper, in original buff wraps. Printed label on front cover reading 'SALE BOOK. | Sold by HUDSON SCOTT, | Stationer and Account Book Manufacturer, Carlisle.' Manuscript title on front cover reads 'Sale a/c of J. Sagar under Bill of Sale to Mr. Stubbs 1856.' and 'Effects of John Sagar, Ironmonger Botchergate under Bill of Sale to Mr. Stubbs. - Jany. 23. 1856.-' Internally clean, in grubby wraps. Description of sale, on first page, signed 'William Browne | Auctioneer'. The 115 lots raised £143 8s 9d. Each lot carries the purchase price and the name of the purchaser (often with occupation or place of residence). Following the lots is a list of expences incurred by the auctioneer, including the cost of 'Advertising in Journal and Printing bills and Catalogues of Sale', 'Advertising in Patriot', 'posting and distributing 130 very large Bills in Town & surrounding district', 'one Man assisting at Sale arranging lots &c', and 'Bellman calling Sale'. No copy of the printed catalogue of the sale appears to be listed on COPAC. BBTI only notes Browne as an auctioneer in 1837.
