4pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and creased laid paper with Joynson watermark dated 1867. The document is headed 'To the Secretary of the Royal Agricultural Society of England', and it is the Secretary's post for which Batty is applying. He describes himself as '30 years of age, married, the son of hte late Col. Batty, of the Guards, and grandson of Sir John Barrow, Secretary of the Admiralty. I was educated at the London University School and at Cheltenham College, at both of which I obtained Mathematical Prizes; and on leaving the latter received the two frst of the accompanying Testimonials with reference to my suitability for official life, as I then thought of entering the Admiralty, but have since applied myself to the Fine Arts: and have, during 7 years, gone through the entire course at the Royal Academy, - thus acquiring a power that might possibly be useful to the Royal Agricultural Society, in making such drawings and plans as might be necessary. He has lived in West Sussex for two and a half years, 'in the midst of Farmers, whose acquaintance I have made'. The testimonials are from: W. Dobson, M.A., Principal of Cheltenham College; Sam. A. Ellis, M.A. Mathematical Master in Cheltenham College; late Scholar of St. John's College, Cambridge; Charles Landseer, Esq., R.A. ('while a Student of the Royal Academy [...] your conduct was always unexceptionable, and [...] you were a creditable and diligent Student in the Schools [...] As the Son of my late Father's old friend, Col. Batty, I sincerely wish you success.'); Rev. T. R. Drake, M.A., Vicar of St. John's, Clapham, Surrey, and late Rector of Fittleworth, near Petworth; Henry Cartwright, Esq., F.S.A., F.R.G.S., Barrister-at-Law; John Barrow, Esq., F.R.S.
