[ J. B. Platnauer. ] Typed Letter Signed ('Plat') to theatre historian W. Macqueen-Pope ('Popey'), accompanying a typescript of his unpublished pseudonymous play 'David and Jonathan'.
ONE: Letter: 1p., 12mo. In good condition. Pope's 'stimulating verve' over 'an excellent lunch', at which 'Stoll' (a member of the family of Sir Oswald Stoll) was present, emboldens Platnauer to hope that his play might be 'a commercial success, despite the admittedly rational principles upon which theatrical choice is based today? Tastes change - usually before the pundits are aware of it. There may exist a public avid for this sort of thing, though I agree it may need a lavish "Tree" production (which it can't get) to attract the public.' He suggests 'a "fashionable" nightly exodus to Hammersmith, like the "Beggar's Opera"', adding 'What then, me hearties?' TWO: Typescript. 81pp., 4to. With manuscript emendations. In good condition, on aged paper, in worn card folder. Title-page reads: ' "David and Jonathan" | A Play in Three Acts by Dick M. Adelar. [last word amended in manuscript from 'Adeler']' In manuscript beneath white label at foot of title-page: 'All communications regarding this ms | To be Addressed to | J. B. Platnauer | c/o 43 Arlington Lodge | Baytree Rd | London SW2.' 'Note' on p.1: 'Events on which this play is based are recorded in the First Book of Samuel, Chapters 16-24, although the chronology of the Bible is not necessarily followed throughout'.
