4pp., 12mo. Bifolium, with leaf dimensions 18 x 11cm. The letter appears complete, in good condition on lightly-aged paper, but a rectangle of about 5.5 x 11cm. (perhaps carrying the recipient's name) has been torn from the bottom of the second leaf. Regarding the request for permission by the recipient's niece to translate 'Dorothy Fox' into French she writes: 'The only work of mine hitherto translated into French is How it all happened which appeared in the Journal des Debats & for this I received from the translator a third of the sum which he received.' She will be 'satisfied in this case with a like arrangement', or will be 'happy to hear any proposition you niece may make'. She ends by asking for the niece's name, '& the names of the works she has already translated'.
