[ Sir John Mowbray, Member of Parliament for Oxford University. ] Autograph Letter Signed ('J R Mowbray') to Lady Hunter, giving reasons why her friend 'Mr Wiles' should vote for Lord Chandos and the Conservatives in the forthcoming General Election.
4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. He asks her to say, 'in answer to the enquiries of Mr. Wiles that Lord Chandos comes forward as a Member of the Conservative party & a supporter of Lord Derby in opposition to the heterogenous combination found under Lord Palmerston'. Mowbray believes that '[a]s Conservatives we shall not offer any factious opposition to the present ministers, but it will be our duty to watch & often to resist their measures.' He denounces the 'revolutionary tendencies of some of the Ministry, the violent anti-church opinions of many, & the absurd peace doctrines of Cobden & Bright'. He hopes her friend will giver his support to Chandos, 'as a moderate Conservative, a firm supporter of the established Church, and an advocate for the maintenance of our national defences - which I greatly fear run a risk of being sacrificed to Mr Gladstone's appetite for economy & reduced estimates'.
