An attractive artefact, printed in black on one side of a 46 x 34 cm piece of thick paper, with the embossed circular 'lyre' seal of the Society added in red ink in the left-hand margin. Completed in manuscript with the details of the election as a fellow of 'The Right Honourable Lord Alverstone G. C. M. G.', on 17 May 1909. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Ornate heading of the Philharmonic Society, with royal crest (the society being 'Under the immediate patronage of | Their Most Gracious Majesties The King & Queen Alexandra') and the engraved names of the principal officers. At the end of the document is a column of the signatures of seven 'Honorary Directors', two of them signing twice: 'Francesco Berger' [(1834-1933), pianist and composer, Professor at the Royal Academy of Music]; 'Waddington Cooke' [1868-1940), composer]; 'William H. Cummings' [William Hayman Cummings (1831-1915), organist]; 'Myles Birket Foster' [(1851-1922), organist, son of the artist of the same name]; 'Edward German' [Sir Edward German (1862-1936), composer]; 'Stanley Hawley' [(1867-1916), composer]; 'Alberto Randegger' [(1832-1911), composer and conductor]; 'William H. Cummings' (signs again, as Honorary Treasurer); 'Francesco Berger' (signs again, as Honorary Secretary).
