Publication details:
15 September 1888.
SKU: 24188

See the entry for his mother Katharine Sarah Macquoid in the Oxford DNB. It is as an authority on English furniture that Macquoid is now largely remembered, but he was Beerbohm Tree’s favoured designer, and in a letter of 1883 Van Gogh commended Macquoid’s illustrations in ‘The Graphic’, along with those of Heilbuth and Tissot, as ‘the non plus ultra of elegance and mild refined feeling’. The present item, clearly a response to a request for an autograph, is on one side of a 16 x 10 cm piece of wove paper. In good condition, with slight traces of mount to the corners. Folded once. The signature is firm and elegant, but the handwriting of the text is somewhat opaque. Appears to read: ‘Sept 15th 1888 / The Further we go in Art the Greater are the difficulties that rise up to meet us / Yrs vy truly / Percy Macquoid’.
