16pp., 8vo. Stapled, unpaginated pamphlet with five blank versos. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Typed label laid down at head of reverse of first leaf: 'Issued by the Royal Society of St. George in W.W.W. London had been severely burned by incendiaries, the Guildhall and eight Wren churches destroyed. | Original contribution by Winston Churchill.' Circular reproduction of black and white engraving, somewhat in the style of a seventeenth-century emblem book, showing the trumpeter riding a carved lion on a globe overlooking a landscape. Churchill's introduction, on the reverse of the first leaf, is short and followed by a facsimile of his signature: 'Lift up your hearts. All will come right. Out of the depths of sorrow and sacrifice will be born again the glory of mankind.' On the facing page is a photographic facsimile of a calligraphic autograph introduction by Gooden, dated July 1941, in which he explains that his print was 'originally issued sixteen years ago under a simple descriptive title', but that a friend 'has found a new name for it, & this little booklet is the result of his efforts - made because he discovered something in the print which symbolized the feelings, expressed by the poet, & in theh hope that others would share the experience.' Loosely inserted is an engraved bookplate, attributed to Gooden in pencil, depicting a shepherd in broad-brimmed hat seated on a rock, a sheep between his legs. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper.
