1p, foolscap 8vo. On piece of wove paper with Britannia watermark. Lightly aged and in fair condition, but with some creasing and nicking at the head. Folded three times into a packet. A printed document, completed in manuscript. Printed at the head: ‘By the Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain and Ireland, &c.’ Begins: ‘WHEREAS we think fit that you shall Command His Majesty’s Gun Boat the [Morwelham] at [Plymouth] You are hereby required and directed to repair forthwith on Board the said Gun Boat and take upon You the Charge and Command of her accordingly’. Signed ‘By Command of their Lordships’ by ‘Evan Nepean’ (Sir Evan Nepean, 1752-1822), who also writes: ‘Mr: John Mc:Kenzie hereby appointed to Command His Majesty’s Gun Boat the Morwelham’. At bottom right, in a column, the signatures of ‘Php Stephens’ (Sir Philip Stephens, 1723-1809), ‘J Gambier’ (James Gambier, Baron Gambier [Lord Gambier], 1756-1833) and ‘W: Young’ (Sir William Young, 1751-1821). The four signatories have entries in the Oxford DNB.
