4 Autograph Letters Signed to his barrister, Richard Williams of Lincoln's Inn Field.
English soldier, father of Frank Abney Hastings (1794-1828; DNB). The condition of these items is not good: the paper being discoloured, brittle and flaking. A series of intemperate communications. Letter 1 is one page, 8vo, of a bifoliate addressed and docketed on the reverse of the second leaf. It reads: 'I have taken a copy of the enclosed, which I send you, that you may get it written fairly, and signed. I shall be easier when it is done'. Letter 2 is 1 page, 8vo, with the remains of the second leaf of the bifoliate docketed. 'I beg, you will have the goodness to get me immediately Lady Howe's determination respecting <?> estate, because, If I do not receive [^ it] on or before the 1st. of Decr., I desire, it may be understood, that I shall then decline parting with it, and in case of being obliged to redeem my Land tax, shall sell another estate'. Letter 3 is 2 pages, 8vo, with the second leaf of the bifolium docketed. 'After what I have done to accomodate Lady Howe, together with my readiness to purchase in the funds regardless of their state, I had surely a right to expect no delay would have occurred - finding it however endless, my patience is exhausted, and I am completely worn out - This [^ is] therefore to authorize you to break off all transactions with Lady Howe, in case the business is not brought to a final conclusion by the 10th of Jany. 1804'. He is going into the country, but his steward will remain in town to oversee the affair. Letter 4 is 2 pages, 8vo, written in the third person. He was 'very much surprized to hear of his having been in Town and quitted it so suddenly, without a single line from him, [...] Mr. Williams must be well aware that the Genl. ony stays in Town (tho' veryy inconvenient to him[self] for the sole purpose of settling his business'.
