Manuscripts

Dilke, the 2nd Baronet (1843-1911), was a disgraced politician and author. Engrossed in black ink on two large pieces of vellum. Ruled with red lines. Two-part schedule. Signed by Dilke and Hadgate to the left of two out of three red-wax seals on green ribbon at foot of document. Second sheet an indenture by Cartwright & Vintner of 51 Bedford Row, with two plans coloured in green, pink, orange and red, bearing stamps to the value of £22 15s. 0d. Witnessed on reverse of indenture, which also bears a memorandum of 16 March 1906.

One page, A4. In poor condition: creased and dogeared with several closed tears and a staple in the top left-hand corner. With 'not valid' in ms in top right-hand corner. The contribution, to be delivered by 1 August 1965, was to have been five thousand words in length, 'at the rate of 10 guineas for each thousand words of the contribution'. In the event it was replaced by Maureen Duffy's piece on 'Lesbianism in London'. Signed by 'Cressida Lindsay' and by 'Desmond Brian' on behalf of Blond.

Clerk to the Privy Council (1794–1865) and noted diarist. Items clearly disbound from volume, with minute foliated '84'. The Order in Council is three pages, folio, on two leaves of gilt-edged laid paper. Good, though slightly discoloured, dusty at head, and with several closed tears and stab marks along one edge. Small square cut away from corner of second leaf (not affecting text). Entirely legible in a clear neat hand.

Article submitted to "Atlantean Research" by Brenda Francklyn of 6 Avenue Road, Highgate, N6, three pages, 4to, typescript with several manuscript corrections and additions in the author's hand. She responds toSuggers lecture "last month" on the Hoerbiger theory of the capture of the Moon and goes on to talk about the reproduction of the Tentyra Zodiac found by Denon. She then discusses S.J. Mackey's work on the Zodiacs, the ignored imlications of it, which she supplements with observations of her own, concluding "Now comes the thrilling point referring to Atlantis . .

Schoolmaster, poet (1754-1836) Two pages, folio, fold marks, other minor defects but complete and clear and mainly good condition. It is addressed to "W Evans Esq., / Baggage Warehouse" ina different hand from all other writing, and, also on the address panel "With R.V's compts". Above another hand has written "Mr Valpy writing".

On piece of laid paper, dimensions roughly 7 1/2 inches by 6 inches. Browning, creased and discoloured, with some foxing and staining. Reads 'Sir | Pay Capt. Eliphalet Thorp Six hundred pounds - and charge the State . . . Pay Table Office March 6th 1780 | £600'. Signature of 'Saml written over those of two members of the Connecticut Pay Table, Finn Wadsworth and John Chenevard, and with 'John Lawrence Esqr- | Treasurer' in bottom left-hand corner. Docketed on reverse 'Dan Parmule' and 'No 3239 | Order | Capt. Eliphalet Thorp | £600 | March 6th. 1780'.

1 page, on paper approximately 8 inches by 10. Grubby, creased and frayed, with several closed tears. Some loss at head caused by breaking of seal. Informs George Stuart that 'a Remittance for Interest on American Stock' has been received from the Bank of the United States, and that 'we are ready to pay to you any Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday, betwixt the Hours of Ten and One'. Signed (according to pencil note at head of letter) by Thomas Baring 'Fran Baring & Co'. Six lines of manuscript calculations at foot of page, giving interest of £141 12s 1d.

Parish of St George's Middlesex also known as St George's-in-the-East to distinguish it from other St George's in London. It was designed by Hawksmoor. Approximately 50 (fifty) invoices and receipts ranging from scraps of 2 x 2" to 4to and folio pages, most approx. 3 x 6".

Four manuscript leaves ranging from 16mo to 4to, with covering typewritten letter, the whole held together by a pin. Somewhat discoloured, but in good condition overall. The letter, in purple ink on Lintine & Co.'s florid black-and-white letterhead, is dated 1 January 1903 and addressed to Messrs Challoner & Shaw, Solicitors, Leek. No more than a note, it requests a list of the creditors to Birch's estate. With the cyclostyled signature of 'David F. Lintine'. The other, manuscript, papers are all clearly from the Challoner archive.

Poet and mountaineer son of Ernest and Grace Rhys. One page, 4to, good condition, suitable for framing, Poem, two stanzas, 16 lines, title at end "[On attempting Snowdon Aug . 09]", starting "When first afar I saw thy mighty height . . . fading in beauty 'fore thy gifted sight. / But when thy foot, O Searcher into Heav'n! . . . "Await," I heard, "thy better wiser year."

1 page, dimensions roughly 8 inches by 6 1/2 inches. Creased and with one closed tear, but in good condition overall. A bill containing 9 items (various quantities of beef, mutton, fouls, ham, geese, puddings, cheese & butter, bread sauce & dressing, liquor), separately charged, and with a total cost of £6 0s 8d. Beneath this '30th. Novr. 1777 | Recd. ye contents ff me [signed] Ralph Stanley'. Typewritten at the head of the page: 'STANLEY, Ralph, 1777.', and with 'CLAYTON MSS.' typewritten on the reverse, which also bears 'No. 200' in a contemporary hand.

Clayton (c.1713-1769) was MP for Bletchingley. 1 page, dimensions roughly 6 inches by 7 inches. In poor condition: creased, discoloured and with several closed tears. 12 items - mainly bushells of malt and hops - amounting to £31 12s 3d. Beneath this the receipt in another hand, signed in the same hand as the bill 'Edward Green'. Docketed on reverse: 'Edwd. Greens Bill for Malt'. Typewritten on reverse 'GREEN, Edward, 1747.' and 'CLAYTON MSS.'

Presumably the Thomas Smyth (b. c. 1799) whose Roman Catholic marriage to Margaret McAleagh took place on the Isle of Man on 27 April 1839. Dimensions roughly 4 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches. Creased and discoloured, with a number of spike holes at foot, not affecting text. Reads: 'Douglas Isle of Man | April 1/53 | Mr. John Whittle | To Thomas Smith | To a Horse & Gig 4 days 1 . 4. 0 | [signed] Thomas Smyth'.

Dimensions: 5 inches by 7 inches. Somewhat grubby and with ink stain at foot. Headed 'THE MASTERS OF FOX HOUNDS ASSOCIATION, | TATTERSALLS, ALBERT GATE, LONDON.' Standing order to Dalkeith's bank, Coutts & Co of 59 Strand, to make an annual payment on 1 May to the Herries Farquhar branch of Lloyds one pound, as his subscription to the association. Signed 'Dalkeith'. Docketed by the bank and pinned to a 'Tattersalls' letterhead, roughly 5 inches by 7 inches, carrying a note which reads 'With the Secretary of the M. F. H. A's compliments.

2 pages, dimensions roughly five inches square. Grubby and discoloured. The heading 'Debentur -' is followed by six short lines of abbreviated Latin ("Annuitat", etc.) and 'Add Tow ye Civil List since Michas 1715 | Ex Recordr. 4o. Aug 1716.' Verso reads 'Augt 1716 | full Contents of this Debentur', followed by the five signatures: 'Edw. Hayman', 'J Jekyll', 'E Jekyll', 'Cha: Cocks' and 'Mary Cocks'. Joseph Jekyll (see DNB), Master of the Rolls, his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Lord Somers (family name Cocks as other signatories).

English architect who built a bridge over the Thames at Richmond. Relates to the lease by him to Graham of property in Queen Street, Mayfair. Signed and sealed by both parties. On the reverse is an assignment of 7 December 1847 from Graham to Elizabeth Anne Howard of 12 Thurloe Square, Brompton. With various seals and stamps. Written in black ink and ruled with red lines.

Deed, 2pp., 34" x 24", folded, 31 July 1727, release of the "Mannor or Lordship and Burrough of St Mawes", John Hawkins, Francis Scobell, and Dame Elizabeth Tredenham, widow of Sir Joseph, signatories, to John Knight (see Encyclopaedia Britannica, under "St Mawes" for detail of this transaction). With: deed, one page, 18 x 9.5", folded, 1 June 1614, stained with loss of text but not of sense. Sale of substantial property in St Mawes by Stephen Williams (aka Christopher), yeoman, to Peter Sydnam, gent.

Miscellaneous writer and inventor ( (1810-1889). One page, 8vo. Text as follows: "O glorious sea of mountains in a storm,/ &c &c/ Martin F. Tupper:/ for the Revd James Newman's Church Bazaar./ 1858 Brecon."

Journalist and police magistrate (1818-1891). 2pp., 8vo. Statement of Account for contributions to the "Miscellany", countersigned by Know three times. "Wellesley" attributes the articles listed in these statements to John Hamilton Reynolds, Keats's friend.

author. He has received royalties on account of his book "Wards of the State: an unofficial view of prisons and the prisoner" (1913). Two items,

One page, 8vo. Giving licence to his tenant Richard Finlow of Liverpool to transfer the freehold of a property in Bootle to John Plumbe of Bootle, painter. The property is "on the marsh at Bootle [...] adjoining the new Road leading from Sand Hills to Bootle afsd. called Derby Road". Signed "Derby". Slight discolouration and with holes from pinning, but in good condition overall.

English actor, playwright, songwriter (1856-1914). One page, 8vo. "Sir Maple is a handy man / And comfort round him spreads, / He furnishes on every plan / And also makes the beds." In bad condition, torn and holed by removal from mount, traces of which are glued to the reverse.

Typescript, 12pp., 4to, cover/title spotted, contents good.

Scottish novelist (1800-1864). One page, 8vo, good. She quotes Shakespeare’s “What’s in a name?” and appends hersignature.

Editor of "Diplomata", antiquary (DNB). Sixteen lines on one page, small folio, some damage, but text complete and clear. Not signed.

Prince related to Victoria (DNB). Piece of paper, c.6 x 4", sl. soiled but clear, missing top left corner (and a word or two), text as follows: " . . . [end of word] 13123 / [P]lease give the Bearer 2 Gal: Brandy No. 2. at 24/6 the Gal: --- / Gleichen/ St James Palace / March 29/83/ The Secretary / A & N. Co:Op: Socty"

Paper, c.6.5 x 4.5", fold mark, some foxing, but image bold and clear of people on the sea-front pulling and pushing an invalid chair against a fierce gale which has caught an umbrella, a fish, a handbill, etc. The sub-title reads "I [underlined] got a nice little airing! / Yours ever / GAB."

Dodington, George Bubb, Baron Melcombe 1691-1762, a Lord of the Treasury, Pope's "Bufo". One page, folio, fold mark, tear, loss of text (including the full signatures formerly below Dodington's), rest of official countersigning, etc. surviving. An order (8 March 1736) to pay £300 from His Majesty's treasure to John, Duke of Montagu (see DNB) "for one quarter of a year due at Christmas 1736 on his Annuity or yearly Pension of One Thousand two hundred pounds . . ."
