Autograph Letter Signed ('J L Motley') to the English historian James Anthony Froude (1818-94).
Three pages, octavo. Very good on lightly aged paper. Interesting communication from one of the nineteenth-century's leading historians to another, with an evaluation of Froude's work by Motley. He is disappointed that Froude's visit to London precedes his own. He has been in Brussels since January, 'occupied with an important <?> correspondence', and is on his way to join his family in Nice. Gives plans for the summer (Switzerland, Germany and London). Thanks the Warrens for their kind remembrance. 'I am very impatient to read your two new volumes, [of his 'History of England [...] to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada', 1856-70] of which I have only read extracts in the reviews. I envy you the possession of a subject, new, brilliant & national - together with the proved power of treating it in a masterly manner'.
