REPUBLIC

From the papers of Sylvia and Robert Lynd. A scarce and historic document: copy in the NLI, and three on JISC (LSE, Oxford and BL, the latter also possessing a copy of the ‘Fortieth Thousand’). On the cover ‘Sinn Fein’ is written without the accent on the ‘e’; while the heading to p.5 has it with the accent. Cover carries a crude outline map of Ireland, crossed by two thick lines, with caption ‘The Cross of Gold’. A frail survival, on discoloured and worn newspaper stock, with chipping to edges and dogeared corners.

Accomplished and attractive bookplates, in an impressive range of styles from modernist to traditional (several with mystical or masonic overtones), produced using various printing processes. The bookplates range in size from 6.5 x 7 cm (Herrmann’s own) to 11.5 x 17.5 cm. Each is dated with Herrmann’s tiny monogram design, adapted to suit its style of composition. The eighteen items are in very good condition, each laid down on a 16 x 25 cm piece of textured grey card.

A poignant letter. See Delane’s entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 16mo. Bifolium. In good condition, with neat thin strip from Victorian windowpane mount adhering to edges of second leaf. Folded for postage. 32 lines, closely written. Presumably with reference to his ‘Life and Death of John of Barneveld’, Motley begins: ‘My dear Delane / Just before leaving England ten days ago in search of health (a fugitive very hard to catch) I begged Murray to send you a copy of a work which was to come out almost immediately.

4pp, 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border (for President Garfield). 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, a little worn and creased. Folded once. Signed ‘Albert D Shaw / U.S. Consul’, and addressed to ‘J. Rawlinson Esq. / Hon. Sec. / Old Trafford.’ He is in receipt of ‘the Resolution passed by the Board of Congregational Ministers of Manchester and neighbourhood, expressing their heartfelt sympathy, and that of the Churches they represent with the American people in the Calamity which has befallen them in he death of President Garfield’.

An interesting letter, casting light on bibliographic and book trade practices in Consulate Paris. 2pp, 12mo. Forty-two lines of closely-written text on the first leaf of a bifolium, the recto of the second leaf being addressed 'Au Citoyen Firmin Didot | Rue du Regard | A Paris'. In good condition, lightly aged, with white paper stub of mount adhering to second leaf.

'Ondra Lysohorsky' is the pen-name of the Lach poet Ervin Goj [Erwin Goy] (1905-1989), who, as a Silesian, was largely responsible for the creation of Lach as a literary language. (Born into the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he repudiated the Czechoslovakian citizenship he inherited.) Having fled the Nazis, Lysohorsky was feted in the Moscow literary circles of the 1940s, with Boris Pasternak among his translators. Feeling that academic promotion was being denied him, he appealed directly to Stalin, but following his return to Czechoslovakia after the war, his situation worsened.

1p, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. From the celebrated manuscript collection of Richard Monckton Milnes (Baron Houghton). Addressed by Girodet on reverse 'préssée | A Monsieur | Monsieur Gros peintre d'histoire rue des champs Elissés la 1ere or 2e porte cochere a droite'.

On 6 x 11 cm piece of paper, laid down on slightly larger piece of grey paper cut from an album. In good condition, lightly aged. The only writing, in a large firm hand, is 'Autograph | Quo Tai-chi'. At the head of the mount, in a contemporary hand: 'Quo-Tai-Chi (Dr) Chinese Ambassador in London'.

One page, 4to, edges sl chipped. mainly good condition, complete. He follows his best wishes (see above) with information about the (formal) political positions he has occupied from President (giving dates of inauguration and retirement ); place of birth (Wellington St, Dublin); when elected to the Dublin Council and Parliament; when Minister for Local Government; and for Finance; when Deputy Prime Minister; current residence at Roundwood Park. Overleaf his name and title (President) in another hand.

2pp., 12mo. On lightly-aged paper with a number of vertical fold lines. The reference to Sir John Bowring dates the letter to before his death in 1872. With reference to Julia Ward Howe (author of the 'Battle Hymn of the Republic') and her husband Samuel Gridley Howe she writes: 'Dr. & Mrs.

1p., 16mo. In good condition. He begins by thanking him for his concern over his health: 'je vais beaucoup mieux et avec des ménagements j'espere que cela n'auras pas de suite'. In the next paragraph he refers to the French architect Julien-David Le Roy, recently deceased: 'je savais le résultat de la tentative faites pour le respectable David le Roi il faut ce consoler avec les bonnes âmes de toute celle que l'on rencontre qui sont seche et aride'. A final paragraph describes his intentions towards 'souscripteurs'. In a postscript he presents his respects to 'Mme Vaudoyer'.

4pp., folio. Bifolium. On aged and creased paper, with slight damage at spine. Tastefully laid out. The front page carries the Programme (from 'A 8 heures: Arrivée de l'Escadre devant Cannes.' to 'A Midi: Départ pour Villefranche.'), the two central pages carry the 'Règlement' (19 articles under the headings 'YACHTS A VAPEUR', 'VOILIERS', 'VAPEURS PORTANT DES PASSAGERS' and 'PLAISANCIERS & EMBARCATIONS DIVERSES') by 'Le Commissaire de l'Inscription maritime, | BLANC' and 'Le Maire, | HIBERT'. The whole of the last page is taken up with a lithographic map of the route ('LITH ROBAUDY CANNES').

Professor Finlay, M.A., S.J., presiding, and reprinted by the Association by desire of the Congress.' Scarce.

Circular Letter, mimeographed, awaiting a signature, one page, 4to, good condition. It commences, We, the undersigned Irish Artists and Writers venture to appeal ... The circumstances surrounding the disposition of Hugh Lane’s Pictures are retailed, and an appeal for the codicil by which they were to go to Dublin to be respected.

Mimeograph, 2pp. fol., pages detached from each other, slightly foxed and chipped, but complete. The internees are characterised, not just Irish (but sub-heading There are still 2 Irish girls interned here) but people the British describe as German sympathisers, some of whom are simply interested in Indian independence. Conditions are Russian. Not listed.

Mimeograph, 8pp., fol., pages detached from each other, slightly stained, foxed and chipped, but complete.(There are at present between 540 & 550 Irish Prisoners at Frongoch). Subjects of report include: housing, events, food, disease, financial aspects, brief report on Mulkerrin who wrote an impertinent letter, Irish books sent but not received, fatigue duty refused, status of prisoners, interception of complaints. Not listed.

Mimeograph, 4pp. (complete?), fol., pages detached from each other, stained, foxed, crumpled, closed tears, and chipped, with loss of a few letters only. It commences, The Committee of the Irish National Relief Fund (London Branch of the Irish National Aid and Volunteer Dependents’ Fund) having been closely in touch with all the events which led up to the release of the interned prisoners at Frongoch, Reading and Aylesbury are convinced that the release was due to the sustained public protests in Ireland ...

J[ames]. J[oseph]. Walsh, Handbill poem, one page, 12mo, creased laid paper, mainly good condition. It is headed ‘THE Flag on the G.P.O. | Easter 1917. | By J. J. Walsh’, and with ‘J. J. Walsh.’ again at foot. The first of three stanzas reads: Why gather the crowd in O’Connell Street? | Why throng all the people there? | What eminent personage do they greet? | With the shouts that fill the air? | Who comes this morning or what’s to be seen | That they hurry and push them so? | ’Tis the rebel standard – white, orange and green | That floats from the G.P.O.

Autograph Signature at end: ‘Lennox Robinson.’ Typescript, 3pp, 4to, good condition.. A bitter denunciation of British rule, written in the immediate aftermath of the 1916 Easter Rising. It begins, ‘Even as I write it is too late; the mischief has been done; eight of the Sinn Fein leaders have been shot.’ Three manuscript emendations: the change of ‘eight’ to ‘12’ here and on p.2; and of ‘treaties’ to ‘treaty’ on p.3.[...] | I write from the South, from a quiet country district. Here there was no trouble.

The cover is printed on one side of a piece of shiny art paper, roughly 20.5 x 13 cm. Photograph of Kubelik and his violin roughly 10.5 x 8 cm. Paper lightly creased and with slight wear along vertical fold across middle of photograph. Good firm signature.

12mo, 3 pp. Good, on browned and lightly creased paper with some wear to extremities. In French. Long thorough order with instructions for delivery, casting light on the logistical problems encountered in international trade in nineteenth-century Europe. Pražak is sending 'six pièces d'or à vingt francs, ou une somme de 120 francs en or', and gives a list of four books he would like sent to him. There follows a discussion of the problems of delivering the books to Prague.

Three pages, octavo. Very good on lightly aged paper. Interesting communication from one of the nineteenth-century's leading historians to another, with an evaluation of Froude's work by Motley. He is disappointed that Froude's visit to London precedes his own. He has been in Brussels since January, 'occupied with an important <?> correspondence', and is on his way to join his family in Nice. Gives plans for the summer (Switzerland, Germany and London). Thanks the Warrens for their kind remembrance.

Two pages, folio. Good, but on discoloured and lightly creased paper, with remains of stub adhering to one edge of verso. In English, with illegible signature. Begins 'The State Office of Statistics appreciating fully the great importance of an exact information of the British publicity of the conditions in the Czechoslovakia has the honour to send you simultaneously her following publications.' Five items listed.

The pictures, which vary in size from 3 inches by 5 inches to 3 inches square, are crudely pasted to a piece of grey card, beneath a heading made up of three pieces apparently cut out of newspapers or magazines and reading 'Royal Wedding Day | 23 July | Andrew & Sarah 1986'. All seven pictures appear to be cropped, and several bear traces of glue. Corners dogeared. In pencil on reverse 'Photographs by Gerald Guttman (= photographer)'. Four pictures, apparently taken from the television, feature the royal couple.
