[Arthur James Lewis, artist and illustrator.] Autograph Letter Signed ('Arthur J Lewis') to publisher Ernest Gambart, regarding the disposal of the disposal of the remaining copies of 'Hood's Poems'.
2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. Addressed to 'E Gambart Esq' and endorsed by the recipient. Two years earlier Gambart had published 'Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood', illustrated with 34 plates by the Junior Etching Club (of which Whistler was a member between 1857 and 1862). The book had been well-received, but the letter makes clear that it had not covered its costs. It begins: 'My dear Sir | (Junior Etching Club) | At the meeting of this Club, on Wednesday last, I submitted to them your suggestion as to the sale of the remaining copies of the “Hood's Poems”, with the plates. | The Club think it most desirable to dispose of the books still on hand, so as to cover the amount of the balance still due to you. But they decidedly object to the plates being included in the sale.' He asks him to effect for the Club 'the arrangement of the affair in that manner', and asks him to deal with him directly, 'the Club having empowered me to settle the matter with you on the best terms possible'.
