[Philip Schaff, Swiss-born Protestant theologian who settled in America.] Autograph Letter Signed, in English, to ‘Mrs. Reynolds’, regarding the Pan-Presbyterian Council and his activities in London.
See his entry in Encyclopaedia Britannica. 2pp, 12mo. Closely-written in a neat and elegant hand, signed ‘Philip Schaff’. In good condition, on browned paper, folded twice for postage. Begins: ‘My dear Mrs. Reynolds: / Many thanks for your kind invitation in which Mrs. Schaff & daughter join.’ Unfortunately he has made a mistake on that day, ‘under the impression that the exercises would be over at about 5 o’clock’: ‘I shall miss a great pleasure of seeing you & Dr Reynolds once more in this brief pilgrimage on earth.’ He has ‘just engaged lodgings to remain here and in the neighbourhood till after the pan-Presbyt. Council’, and he is off to Lincoln, ‘to spend Sunday with Canon Venables’. The letter concludes: ‘I am in pleasant Aosta and Cheshunt reminiscences.’
