A nice item relating to a famously secretive and influential society. See Taylor’s entry in the Oxford DNB (Ferrar is not to be confused with the Dean of Canterbury Frederic Farrar, who was an Apostle). 2pp, 12mo. On bifolium. Sixteen lines, very neatly written. On aged and creased paper, with part of the leaf torn away at top left (not affecting text). Folded for postage. 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed to 'My dear Warden', and sending his 'kind regards to Mrs Hyslop & yourself', and so addressed to Rev. Archibald Richard Frith Hyslop (1866-1926), Warden of Trinity College, Glenalmond. He has received Hyslop's letter on his 'return from a Highland visit'. He gives his reasons for having to leave early on the following Monday and Tuesday (a journey to Perth and another to Oban).

Prince Leopold, Queen Victoria's youngest son, was at Christ Church, Oxford, between 1872 and 1876.

Learned and witty, Spedding was a popular figure within the literary scene of Victorian London. As he lay dying following an accident, Tennyson rushed to the hospital and begged admission to his bedside. When approached by Delia Bacon, he dismissed the Baconian theory with contempt, and was the first to realise that the play 'Henry VIII' was a collaboration between Shakespeare and John Fletcher. Both of the present letters are signed 'Jas Spedding' and addressed to 'My dear Mrs. Pollock', and both in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with minor traces of glue from mount.
